Party Like a Pollinator

Happy Pollinator Week 2023!

From June 19-25 the US Department of Agriculture recognizes pollinator health and research.Over 100 types of crops in the US rely on pollinators. Worldwide pollinators provide us with crops and help keep them in production and the costs low. The value honeybees add to the US agricultural production is 18 BILLION dollars annually. Think about how much more our favorite treats would cost if pollinators weren't out there working hard for us!?

Often times when we think of pollinators we think of bees...maybe butterflies. But there are so many other pollinators out there! Moths, wasps, birds, bats, beetles and even some small mammals all work hard to pollinate for us.

What is pollination?

Pollination is when the pollen of a plant moves from the anther to the stigma of a plant. This is the first step in creating the next generation of plants.

How can I help pollinators?

-Plant native plants.

-Plant different items so that you have blooms all through the growing season.

-Reduce or limit pesticides.

-Support your local beekeepers! Buy your honey local.

-Create a bee bath to help your backyard pollinators quench their thirst.

How are you celebrating pollinator week?
